Are you a Twit? Do you Tweet?

Posted by Martin Jamieson | April 11, 2008 .

Twitter seems to have exploded over the past few weeks, and it’s little wonder considering prominent bloggers such as Darren Rowse, Daniel Scocco and John Chow have all blogged about their experiences on Twitter lately.

It’s also proving to be a great way to promote a little interest in your blog and get some link love from some really popular sites as you can see from some recent expirements on Problogger and JohnChow.com.

The thing I really love about Twitter, is that you don’t need to be a power user to benefit from it. I’ve met so many wonderful people on Twitter, many go out of their way to help and it is so easy to feel as though you are contributing to the conversation. Once you get about 10-20 active followers, you’ll be having fun in no time and networking like never before. If you’ve never really been involved with social networking before, then Twitter is a great place to start.

Here’s a few tips I’ve found for growing your Twitter following when you’re first starting out:

  • Anytime you see a post about Twitter on a blog (especially a popular blog), leave a comment and make sure you post your Twitter profile url, then go through all the other comments look at other profiles listed and follow anyone that looks interesting to you.
  • Participate in the conversation, as you tweet @ replies to other people on twitter, their followers will see your replies and may click through to your profile.
  • Once you’ve followed a few people, use Twubble to find ‘friends of friends’ and look for interesting profiles that the people you’re following are following.

There’s a lot more to it than that obviously, but Twitter is a great place to network, and networking opens you up to new audiences - so what are you waiting for? …and don’t forget to leave your Twitter profile in the comments!
